Brief description of project:
Tea gardens and haor are such marginalized areas where majority of the household falls below absolute poverty lines. Negligible percentage of the children attends preschools in tea gardens while dropout rate from primary education is the highest in haor areas. Child labor is common among the children and there is high prevalence of child marriage among the girls. In order to address this situation, the project will focus on (1) access to early childhood education: early childhood development activities will be introduced through 15 ECD centers for the children aged 3-5 years old - involvement of parents and community people will be ensured through awareness raising and capacity building on ECD, child rights and child protection. Besides, learning environment in targeted 4 company schools of tea gardens will be improved through training of teachers, supply of pedagogic materials and participation of children in school governance. Communities and School Management Committee will be empowered to manage ECD centers and ensure school development, for the betterment of the children (2) protection: communities will be enabled to raise voice on child rights and protection issues. Regular communication will be maintained with local Education offices and likeminded entities to have required cooperation and collaboration.

The proposed project has been designed to improve education of the children living in tea gardens and haor areas. As a new experience of Educo in working at hard to reach areas, this project will be of one year duration to intervene in 04 Tea Gardens in Sreemongal and Kamalgonj Upazila of Moulvibazar district and a haor named as Baikka Beel. Several activities have been designed under this project to achieve the overall objective. Being in a pilot project, relationships with stakeholders need to be built progressively. The outcomes and impact of this pilot project will be evaluated in order to decide on how to extend the activities in a further phase.

Expected results of project:
Acquisition of Basic Learning Abilities by Children in Sreemongal and Kamalgonj Upazila of Moulvibazar District, Bangladesh
1. Increased access to quality ECD facilities and services of young children in the Tea gardens and Haor areas.
2. Improved access to quality Primary (Company) School facilities and services of children in the Tea gardens.
3. Enhanced responsiveness of Community (SMCs, CMCs and Parents) on Child Rights and Protection in the Tea gardens and Haor areas.

Achievement so far (Up to June 2017):
•-> 15 ECD centers have been established and the community leaders, local elected bodies, parents, panchayet members are actively communicating and supporting with ECD centre
•-> All ECD facilitator are received training including refresher training and applying training knowledge in ECD activities, as a result Children are enjoying the ECD activities very much
•-> CMC formation has been completed and they are oriented on project activities. CMC Member are actively participating in project activities, they are visiting the centre regularly.
•-> One SMC has been oriented on roles and responsibilities and they are playing good roles to uphold child rights and protection in the Tea garden and Haor.
